Sport Management Senior Capstone Experience Program

This program will enable students to work with an organization related to sport management for a minimum of 540 hours over the duration of one academic semester (summer, fall or spring). The program will include work experience in such areas as marketing, communications, busines and finance, event management, facilities management, administration, etc. A student will gain as much hands-on experience as possible in the varied areas under the supervision of qualified professionals in the sport industry.

Tyler Young & Tiki Barber, Steiner Sports Marketing

Specific Objectives
Students will have the opportunity to...
  1. gain practical industry-related experience in specific areas of concentration within the organization under professional supervision and guidance.
  2. apply theories and principles from their formal education to specific situations within the sport industry.
  3. use interpersonal and professional communication skills.
  4. learn and work with trained and experienced professionals in the sport industry.
  5. demonstrate creativity, initiative, leadership and responsibility.
  6. observe and analyze professional behavior in the sport industry.

Student Responsibilities

  1. Keep a daily log.

  3. Complete a weekly time sheet.
  4. Complete a self-evaluation form three different times during the course of the internship.
  5. Participate in an online discussion, utilizing Blackboard's Discussion Board, with other students enrolled in the experience program. Students will be responsible for communicating with a different class member a minimum of three times during the course of their internship. The goal is to create dialogue regarding the different experiences each person is having at their internship. The faculty advisor will guide the discussions each week by providing specific questions and topics to focus on.
  6. Participate in a webcam, conference call and/or site visit with the faculty advisor and site supervisor at least once during the internship.
  7. Develop a professional portfolio with project materials that were conceptualized and/or completed during the internship.
  8. Once the student has completed the internship, they must complete a written project. This project is a major part of the internship and learning experience.
  9. Students will be expected to make a 15-30 minute presentation to the Sport Management faculty regarding their internship experience. Presentations will be held on campus and will be open to all sport management majors in an effort to explore different opportunities within the field.

Note: The students' final grades will be determined by the sport management faculty advisor in conjunction with the site supervisor.
