Minor in Social Welfare
The minor in social welfare covers such topics as cultural diversity, social policy, social justice, social welfare history, and the social work profession. Open to all students at SU, the minor is designed to complement a variety of major programs.
Curriculum
The social welfare minor includes 18 credits, 12 of which must be 300-level courses or above.
At least one of the following: SWK 115 Introduction to Social Work SWK 201 Social Work Practice and Skills Laboratory I*
Five of the following: SWK 314 Social Welfare Policy and Services I SWK 315 Social Welfare Policy and Services II SWK 326 Persons in Social Contexts SWK 328 Human Diversity in Social Contexts SWK 361 Foundations of Social Work Research (prereq: statistics course or permission) SWK 458 Practice and Policy in Adult Corrections (open to juniors and seniors only)
Other SWK courses as available (excluding those restricted to majors)
*If both SWK 115 and SWK 201 are taken, SWK 115 must be taken first
Declaring the minor
To declare a minor in social welfare, students must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at SU, be in good standing, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Minor courses must be completed at SU unless a waiver is granted by the College of Human Services and Health Professions. A limit of three transfer credits may be applied with permission.
