In the College of Human Ecology, we place a high value on academic advising. All undergraduate students are required to meet with their advisors at least once per semester; and it is strongly recommended that such meetings take place more frequently so that students may work closely with their advisors to explore available academic, professional, and extracurricular opportunities both on and off campus.
What is academic advising/counseling?
Academic advising (also known as academic counseling) is an opportunity for you to work with a professional staff or faculty member who is well-versed in helping you make the most of your college education. The primary goal of advising is to assist you as you develop academic goals that are compatible with your life goals. Your academic counselor, peer advisor, and faculty advisor will help you maximize the resources and opportunities available to you during your undergraduate career. Academic advising is a continuous process of clarification and evaluation.
Goals for academic advising/counseling include:
- Clarification of life and career goals
- Development of educational plans
- Selection of appropriate courses and other educational experiences
- Interpretation of institutional requirements
- Increasing student awareness of available educational and career resources
- Evaluation of and assistance with student progress toward established goals
- Development of decision-making skills
- Reinforcement of student direction
Because both faculty and professional advisors have extensive knowledge of the University and its resources, they are able to effectively address your questions and concerns and direct you to the people and places that will enrich your college experience.
In addition, the advising staff works closely with Student Support Services to help you develop a sound basis for becoming strong, proactive learners.
